8 Types of Windows Suitable for Homes: Features and Selection

I. Introduction

Windows are an indispensable part of a home. They not only allow us to see the outside world, but their functions and styles also have a significant impact on the home environment. From ventilation, lighting to cost, as well as the coordination with the overall design of the house, multiple factors need to be considered when choosing window styles. Whether it's a new house construction or an old house renovation, it's crucial to choose windows that meet the requirements of lighting, functionality and price.

II. Introduction of 8 Types of Windows

(I) Casement Windows

Casement windows, also known as crank windows, open in a similar way to Doors , swinging on hinges. They have strong sealing properties, effectively resisting wind and rain, and the swinging function can ensure a large amount of air flow when needed. The screen window can be firmly installed inside the window, facilitating cleaning. The installation cost of a single Casement Window ranges from $300 to $750. However, when installing, pay attention to the house design to avoid conflicts between open windows, and casement windows are not suitable for fixed window - type air - conditioning units.

  • Advantages: Easy to open and close, with weather - proof and energy - saving seals, promoting air circulation.
  • Disadvantages: Mechanical parts are prone to wear and tear or damage, and are easily damaged when exposed to the air, not suitable for window - type air - conditioning units.

(II) Double - Hung or Single - Hung Windows

These are the most common window styles, opening by sliding along a vertical track. A single - hung window can only be opened from the lower half. Unlike casement windows, they will not collide with each other or with external objects when opened. They have good ventilation, are easy to clean, and are relatively easy to replace. The cost of double - hung windows is slightly higher than that of single - hung windows, with an average installation price per window ranging from $200 to $1,000. However, due to working against gravity, they may not stay open as expected if not properly maintained.

  • Advantages: Good ventilation, a wide range of retail products, cost - effective.
  • Disadvantages: May have slipping problems, require more physical effort to open or close, and the seal is not weather - proof.

(III) Picture Windows

Picture windows are fixed in place and do not block the outside view, but there is no air flow. The absence of an opening device makes maintenance simple, with good sealing and weather - proofing. However, they are not energy - efficient, and heat may be lost in cold months, and the sunlight passing through may overheat the indoor space in warm months. The installation cost per window ranges from $150 to $750.

  • Advantages: Unobstructed view, cheaper than mechanical windows, weather - proof seal.
  • Disadvantages: Difficult to clean on the outside, may consume energy, no air flow or ventilation.

(IV) Bay Windows

The term "bay window" is both practical and an interesting design feature, referring to a group of windows that extend to the outside of the house. Inside, it can form a bay or a shelf. The individual windows in a bay window group intersect at an angle. Bow windows are similar, but designed in an arc with no angles between the windows. The cost of 改造 and adding a bay window can be high, ranging from $1,150 to $3,550. If you are just replacing the windows in an existing bay window arrangement, the price will depend on the specific window style. In a typical bay window arrangement, the central window is usually a fixed picture window, while the two side windows may be casement windows, single - hung windows or double - hung windows.

  • Advantages: Unique architectural style, abundant natural light, increasing indoor area.
  • Disadvantages: Expensive, requires skilled installation, may block sidewalks or exterior spaces.

(V) Sliding Windows

Sliding windows are a more common choice for horizontal windows. They work in a similar way as the name suggests: one part slides over another part, just like a Sliding Glass Door. This enables good air flow and relatively good sealing. They are usually used for basement exit windows, but may lack an elegant appearance in areas where appearance is more emphasized. Except for the lock, sliding windows have no mechanical parts, which helps reduce maintenance and overall cost. The average installation cost of sliding windows ranges from $400 to $1,300.

  • Advantages: One of the windows with the lowest installation cost, a good choice for exit windows, easy to operate and durable.
  • Disadvantages: May deform over time, difficult to clean the outside, the central frame blocks the view.

(VI) Awning Windows

These windows are named because they provide awning - like protection when opened. If you want to keep the windows open during rainy days, they are a good choice. The hinges of awning windows are at the top, and they can be installed above, below or on the side of a picture window. Unlike casement windows that open along the vertical plane, awning windows open from the top of the window frame. The crank mechanism is easy to operate, and a tight seal is formed when not in use. When opened, they can achieve good air flow. However, awning windows protrude outward and may block walkways. This problem can be avoided if they are used on walls on the second floor or higher. The average installation cost per awning window ranges from $350 to $900.

  • Advantages: Can be kept open during rain, highly sealed and safe, easy to open and close.
  • Disadvantages: Mechanical parts may wear out, easily damaged when exposed to the air, may block exterior spaces.

(VII) Decorative Glass Windows

Decorative glass windows have various styles, from stained glass to glass blocks, and are generally fixed. These windows serve two purposes: they provide an aesthetic design point and can provide some privacy. Therefore, they are usually located near the Front Door or in the bathroom. Although decorative glass windows can provide natural light indoors, they are not the best choice if you want to see the outdoor scenery. The installation cost of glass blocks ranges from $375 to $800.

  • Advantages: Provide light and privacy, can complement historic buildings, weather - proof.
  • Disadvantages: Unable to see the outside scenery, may look outdated, thin glass is not energy - efficient.

(VIII) Skylights

Skylights are an excellent solution for providing natural light to indoor rooms and are built on the roof. Skylights can be fixed or ventilated. The openable type is similar to casement windows or awning windows as they are opened with hinges. Although you should not expect skylights to open completely, even a little ventilation can provide a satisfactory air flow in the space. The installation of skylights comes at a cost, with an average cost per skylight ranging from $900 to $2,150.

  • Advantages: Provide natural light for dark or indoor spaces, contribute to indoor solar heating, beautiful.
  • Disadvantages: Susceptible to hail and other natural factors, improper sealing may cause leakage, difficult to clean, and may be difficult to open.
